My Living Legacy

What is a living legacy?

To the main character of Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core, it meant to pass on the buster sword. To pass on the legacy, the honor and the dreams of those that wielded this very powerful blade. Zack is a character who has tenacity and heart, guided him through the darkness and difficulty that was presented to him as a Soldier. Even in the face of true evil, even when he discovered the true intentions of those he worked for. He never forgot his purpose. Just as Zack carries the buster sword throughout his journey, growing and maturing through the difficulties of life.

I too carry my buster sword, which is why I resonate so heavily with this character. The art you see before you is not just something spurred on from the depths of my imagination or understanding of art. Its so much more than that, it is the very embodiment of those who placed such faith, hope and dreams into my heart. Where their very fingerprints are present in all of my work. Starting with my father, drawing cars on little note pads, that made my eyes glow with wonder. Realizing that with our own hands we can take emptiness and create life on paper. With my friends Stephen and Sergio from the 4th grade, who did nothing but draw DBZ characters with boxing gloves. Fueling my love of DBZ and the concept of anime at the time. To one of my most beloved childhood friends Devin, who inspired me to create my own character and story. Who taught me the importance of friendship, faith and family. Whose his mother Patty cared for me as one of her own in some very dark times. To my beautiful and amazing wife Gaby, who saw my drawings and presented the concept of shading. Who gave depth to my fictional characters, giving them new meaning. To Alex who I consider a brother, whose friendship is cherished greatly. Who taught me what art can be, how deep and profound the meaning of creation can become. A man with such a captivating imagination and brilliant writer. His father Tony, who through his art from previous years, showed the power of inking and contrast in character designs. To each of my beautiful children Eze, Ayane and Jedi, who are in awe of each of my pieces, putting a big smile on my face when times felt so tough. To my brothers in arms who encouraged me greatly Danny, Kaymon, Jared, Austin, these amazing online art warriors from all across the globe. Who have been nothing but encouraging and supportive throughout my journey.

To those whose art has inspired me greatly in very different and unique ways. To my mentor/friend/brother David Larson, who taught me the beauty of drawing for the Lord and to have the will to push ahead, no matter how dark it gets. That the light of Christ outshines it all. To my inspiration Matt Rhodes, whose artwork bleeds with such creativity and vigor. Who has created artwork and concept art for many of my favorite videogames. To Hardy Fowler who I consider a teacher, whose lessons on Skillshare has given such a foundation to my craft. Providing roots to a tree that will continue to grow strong. To my creativity Butch Hartman, whose artwork is recognizable in any character he draws. His humility and grace towards his audience and fans, shows his integrity as a person. To my depths Dominic Mayer, whose art can literally suck you in. With use of rich, vibrant colors and shapes. Creating with such a deepness like a well of profound imagination that never ends.

I am in a place in my life where I want my legacy to be received and passed on, knowing full well that the giants beforehand who carried the blade known as art will always be remembered.

Even if it's just one person who saw the Lord's reflection in my work. Then it will all be worth it, cause in the end, I want to hear well done, good and faithful servant from my King.

That is my living legacy.
